BODIES OF PRACTICE

'BIZARRE OCCURANCES'

My work creating 'bizarre occurrences' was an investigation which sparked my intrigue in the uncomfortable aspects of 'the social'.

The series of video artworks, in comedy-style 'sketches' was a manifestation of my mission to convey a sense of awkwardness and inflict an uncomfortable mood upon the viewer by pushing to the limits aspects of our social lives which we struggle to make peace with.

This included pushing awkward silences to the absolute extreme, humiliating myself as the performer, in an attempt to inflict second hand embarrassment among the audience.

The project took a film making approach, which added a DIY-amateur element to the investigation as a whole.  The process of creating the work began with script writing, then recruiting and directing actors to create the video artworks. For the exhibition, the artworks played on wall mounted TVs in a white cube gallery space, accompanied by twelve individual scripts displayed among them. This added an archival element to the visual communication of the work, separating the exhibition from the live, chaotic performances for video artwork which were filmed in the previous weeks.
